New York beats US record for sports betting

In the 23 days since the legalisation of online sports betting in New York, the city has surpassed the previous wagering record in New Jersey by a whopping $330m - by New York players wagering $1.63bn in that time - also beating the record of $1.02bn set by Nevada in December.

Contributing operators to such impressive figures were FanDuel, Caesars Sportsbook, Rush Street Interactive and DraftKings, who began operations on the first day in New York. Quickly, fellow operators are beginning to follow suit with taking bets online or via web apps such as Wynn Interactive, BetMGM, Bally Bet Resort, World Bet and PointsBet - so this doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon.

New York’s gaming commission is accepting proposals for three statewide casinos, in order to bring in a “substantial amount of revenue for the state education fund”, according to Governor Hochul. She also went on to explain that within budgets, funds from online gaming will go on to support:

According to Lindsay Slater, MD at GeoComply, stated that: “The data tell us that New Yorkers are dumping illegal sportsbooks for the new legal options, and operators are also excelling at attracting first-time bettors”.
